Interior Painting in Winter: Can You Paint Your NH Home When It’s Cold Outside?

New Hampshire homeowners often assume interior painting needs to wait for warmer

weather. The good news: interior painting can absolutely be done during the winter, and

it’s actually one of the best times to schedule the work. Here’s why.

Interior painting happens inside your climate-controlled home, not outside. As long as

your home is heated to a normal, comfortable temperature (65 to 75 degrees), paint will

apply and cure properly regardless of what’s happening outside. Modern premium

paints are engineered to perform in standard indoor conditions year-round.

Winter is often the best time to schedule interior painting for a few practical reasons.

Painting contractors tend to have more availability during the winter months, which

means you may get your project scheduled faster and have more flexibility on timing.

Some contractors also offer winter pricing incentives to keep their crews busy during the

slower season.

The main consideration for winter painting in New Hampshire is indoor air quality. When

it’s 10 degrees outside, you’re not opening windows for ventilation the way you might in

July. This makes low-VOC and zero-VOC paints essential for cold-weather projects.

The premium paints we use — Benjamin Moore Regal Select, Sherwin-Williams

Emerald, and similar lines — are all available in low-VOC formulations that produce

minimal odor and off-gas very little. Most homeowners report that they can barely smell

the paint, even with windows closed.

Humidity is another factor. New Hampshire homes in winter tend to have very dry air

from forced-air heating systems, which can actually be an advantage for paint drying —

low humidity helps paint cure faster and more evenly. However, extremely dry

conditions (below 25 percent relative humidity) can cause paint to dry too quickly, which

can lead to brush marks and poor leveling. Our crews monitor conditions and adjust

technique accordingly.

One more winter advantage: if you’re planning to sell your home in the spring, painting

during the winter gets the work done well before listing season. Your home will be

freshly painted, fully cured, and photo-ready when the New Hampshire real estate

market picks up in March and April.

We paint interiors year-round across New Hampshire and within 75 miles. If you’ve

been putting off a painting project because of the season, don’t wait — winter is a great

time to get it done. Free estimates available.
